During the last decades, research and technological development have contributed
to our societies’ advancement in awareness, knowledge and policy
insight of the role water plays in our environmental and socio-economic welfare,
and the need to proactively defend the sustainability of our aquatic ecosystems.
This deeper understanding, combined with scientifi c underpinning of
the diverse impacts of climate change and all other global change processes,
have resulted in a wider recognition of the urgent need for new concepts and
tools to support a paradigm shift in the way we plan, manage and use water
resources in all aspects of our every day life....
