Africa and Europe Combatting Climate Change - ECDPM 2015
The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris(COP21) in December 2015 is fast approaching.
Success at COP21 is critical to the post-2015 global climate regime that could keep climate change under control. If a new climate agreement is not reached, the world’s sustainable development path will be jeopardized. However, many issues remain unresolved. Stakeholders should exploit every opportunity available to advance the dialogue and cooperation around those issues and find solutions before COP21.
When African and EU leaders gathered at the 4th EU-Africa Summit in 2014 to discuss several common challenges, including climate change, the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU) reiterated their shared concerns in relation to climate change. They expressed their willingness to fight it together and ensure that an effective agreement would be reached in 2015. Yet, not much action has taken place since that Summit.
The question remains whether Africa-EU relations add value to international climate policy processes and improve the odds of concluding an ambitious and fair agreement in Paris.
