Agriculture and nutrition: a common future
Malnutrition poses a serious threat to social development and economic growth. Although significant progress has been made since the last decades notably through health sector interventions, malnutrition persists and more efforts are needed. As recalled during the international conference on nutrition (ICN2) in Rome last November, well-designed and implemented agriculture policies can effectively and sustainably contribute to reducing malnutrition.
As key partners in the agriculture sector and truly committed to reducing malnutrition, the European Union, the Food And Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation and the World Bank Group have developed a framework for joint action to strengthen the agriculture and nutrition nexus.
This framework outlines the potential of agriculture to improve nutrition, identifies guiding principles and provides a joint strategic response for ensuring alignment in the design of policies and operational programmes in agriculture and nutrition.
This framework was presented and highly welcomed at the ICN2 side event "Enhancing the Impact of Agricultural and Food Policies on Nutrition".
