The GEO Cities project seeks to promote better understanding of the dynamics of cities and their environments, providing municipal governments, scientists, policymakers and the general public; reliable and updated information on the urban environment and thus provide a basis for policy formulation and decision-decisions. The first phase of the project, which began in 2001, identified seven pilot cities: Rio de Janeiro, Manaus, Buenos Aires, Havana, Bogota, Mexico City and Santiago. By 2011 it had added 39 conducted their urban environmental assessments with funds from various sources.
