November 2011 Somaliland Puntland mission report

Joint visit with Devco.

With the exception of districts bordering Puntland (Sool, Sanaag), the overall situation in Somaliland seems to be relatively stable with many development activities ongoing. The overall situation in Puntland remains fragile with an apparent equilibrium between humanitarian and development assistance

The health system in Somaliland is developing and encouraging achievements are made thanks to a great deal of community involvement, local leadership, foreign assistance and security. The health system in Garowe (Puntland) is still quite rudimentary but here too, some important development work is ongoing in the northern parts of the region.

Eventual point of anchorage for LRRD include: provision of mental health care, training of healthcare workers, initiatives to improve quality and access to healthcare (vouchers,..).

Strategic gaps and delays in implementation were main findings from a visit to the ECHO funded nutritional activities in Garowe.
