Nutrition in developing countries. Strategy document
The DOS offers a framework for improving the synergy between all those involved in French cooperation. The first part of the document reviews the double burden of undernutrition and overnutrition in some coun-tries, the economics of malnutrition and the multiple causes of malnutrition. There are two possible types of solution: direct action on immediate causes (breastfeeding, vitamin supplements, etc.) and indirect action on underlying causes (supporting agriculture, education, water, sanitation, etc.). National systems and international governance also need improving.
The second part on strategic orientations gives two targets for France's action on malnutrition: preventing and treating malnutrition in women of childbearing age and children under two, and making international efforts more effective in addressing malnutrition. France has chosen to make different commitments in order to leverage these two major thrusts, including national capacity building, supporting information systems, research and development and capitalisation of experience for making political decisions, supporting priority actions for preventing and fighting malnutrition and supporting the mobilisation of European partners.
The last part of the document deals with methods of implementing this strategic framework by setting up a monitoring committee. A brochure based on the strategy paper is also available.
