Policies and interventions to remove gender‐relatedbarriers to girls' school participation and learning in low‐ andmiddle‐income countries: A systematic review of the evidence
This systematic review summarises and assesses evidence from 82 experimental and quasi-experimental studies on policies and interventions aimed at removing gender-related barriers to girls' school participation and learning in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). It evaluates a broad set of interventions designed to address gender-specific barriers to education, such as financial constraints, lack of academic support, insufficient access to schools, and issues related to school-based gender violence.
The review covers interventions that tackle various barriers, including the inability to afford school fees and materials, inadequate menstrual hygiene management, child marriage, and gender-biased norms. It highlights promising approaches, such as improving water and sanitation in schools and providing better academic and material support to girls, while also identifying areas where more research is needed. The review underscores that evidence is insufficient in several areas, such as school-related gender-based violence and sports programmes for girls, and that more research is necessary to understand the most effective interventions.
