RESET: South Omo Cluster
The Resilience Building for Sustainable Livelihoods & Transformation (RESULT) in South Omo cluster, SNNPR, Ethiopia is one of the eight projects under the RESET Programme (Resilience Building in Ethiopia). The contract with VITA (consortium lead) was signed on September 23th, 2016 for a total amount of 4,700,000 Euros (10% contribution by the partners). The project is implemented in 3 districts of South Omo (Dassenech, Nyangatom and Hamer) by a consortium of 5 international and local NGOs: VITA, iDE-UK, VSF Germany, AMREF and AFD for a period of 42 months.
The overall objective of the project is to strengthen economic opportunities and resilience of the most vulnerable communities to human-induced and natural disaster crises, through measures that will increase livelihoods and employment, and better access to basic services. In particular, 10,869 targeted vulnerable pastoralists, agro-pastoralists and pastoralist dropouts in three target woredas of South Omo cluster will strengthen their resilience capacity through measures that will enhance livelihood productivity & income; and increase employment opportunities, and better access to basic services.
The intervention has three main outcomes:
- Increased access to sustainable basic services for pastoralist, agro-pastoralist and pastoral dropouts thereby reducing their vulnerability to external shocks.
- Strengthened access and quality of nutrition service for 8314 children and 2,000 Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLW).
- Improved access to promotive, preventive and curative primary health care services for 10,869 HHs.
- Increased access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation and hygiene practices for 10,869HHs.
- Enhanced livelihood productivity and income, and diversification opportunities for 10,869 HHs.
- Enhanced Livestock & Fishery production, productivity, marketing and value chain for 10,869 HHs
- Improved access to crop productivity enhancing technologies and practices by 2,570 agro-pastoralists through engaging them in small scale irrigation, dryland farming and productive capacity for 105 pastoral dropouts
- Enhanced access to employment opportunities and promotion of innovative technologies for 750 HHs and 230 pastoral dropouts (youth and women)
- Improved Disaster Risk Management and capacity of pastoralist, agro pastoralist and other actors in the area
- Strengthen the capacity of target community and local authorities to prevent, mitigate and response to disaster situations
- Improved community based peace building mechanism and common cross border resource management and utilizations
