The Situation of Young People in the EU in 2024 - EC Report
“We are not just the future, we are the present. Listen to us, work with us, and let us lead.” - youth participant of the EU Youth Dialogue
Young Europeans are raising their voices louder than ever, demanding a seat at the table on the issues that shape their lives. The EU Youth Report 2024 companion captures this energy, revealing both the challenges and opportunities facing Europe’s youth today. As the continent navigates social, economic, and environmental change, young people’s perspectives are not only relevant—they are essential.
The 2024 report offers a comprehensive overview of youth realities across the EU. While over 70% of young people report voting, turnout in the 2024 European elections declined, underscoring the need to strengthen youth engagement. Persistent challenges remain: 30% of 15-year-olds struggle with basic maths, and nearly half of young people report mental health difficulties over the past year. Unemployment hovers around 10%, with vulnerable groups facing even greater barriers. Affordable housing and cost-of-living support are top priorities, followed closely by access to education, training, and mental health services.
The report also highlights the EU’s commitment to continue empowering youth. Programmes like Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps are equipping young people with skills and opportunities to make a difference. New policies and initiatives—including the Youth Policy Dialogues and the EU Youth Stakeholders Group—are ensuring that youth voices are heard at every stage of policymaking. Looking forward, the European Commission will launch a broad listening process in 2025–2026 to help shape the next EU Youth Strategy, reaffirming that young people’s perspectives will remain central to Europe’s future.
