Summaries of contributions to the Public Consultation - February 2010

The European Commission and Parliament have drawn up this report to provide a policy framework for the EU and Member States to tackle hunger and malnutrition. This final version follows the public online consultation that took place from late 2009 to early 2010 based on a preparatory analysis document. European Ministers of Foreign Affairs are due to adopt the report on 10 and 11 May. The EC report is built around the 4 pillars of food security: availability of food, access to food, nutrition, prevention and management of food crises. The last of these deals with the link between relief, rehabilitation and development, and addresses the volatility of agricultural prices. The report also considers the global challenges for food security, particularly climate change and massive acquisition of farm land. It emphasises the importance of aligning EU and international interventions on food security by improving the governance of the international system via the overhaul of the Committee on Food Security (CFS). Several documents are attached to this report. One is a review of contributions received from the public consultation. Another details some of the questions in the report. An analytical document was drawn up before the public consultation.
