SUSTAINABLE TRADE AND INVESTMENT: ACHIEVING THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
On 1 September, UNEP DTIE has published a new brochure on trade and SDGs, entitled ‘Sustainable Trade and Investment: Achieving the sustainable development goals’. The eight page-brochure illustrates a critical role of trade in delivery of sustainable development and stresses the importance of bringing sustainability in trade issues by mapping the impacts of trade with each SDG. The paper points out that sustainable trade transformed by re-forming unhealthy trade subsidies, addressing illegal wildlife, reducing footprint and carbon emissions will ad-dress the impacts of trade on the environment. Trade opportunities arising from a shift to a greener economy will also be a good opportunity for countries to achieve sustainable economic growth. UNEP’s sustainable trade initia-tive is expected to contribute to strengthening capacity building of countries for designing sustainable and equita-ble trade policies.
