1. Africa-EU Summits
The Summits of Heads of States and Governments take place traditionally every three years alternately in Africa and Europe. These Summits take stock of the progress made in the implementation of commitments and provide political guidance for further work. More
2. 5th African Union-EU Summit
The 5th African Union - European Union Summit brought together EU and African leaders to define the future direction for cooperation between the two continents. It took place on 29-30 November 2017 in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, under the overarching theme of "Investing in Youth for a sustainable future".
Leaders adopted a Joint declaration setting out their commitment to invest in youth for accelerated inclusive growth and sustainable development.
They agreed on four common strategic priorities for the period leading up to the next Summit:
•Investing in people – education, science, technology and skills development
•Strengthening Resilience, Peace, Security and Governance
•Migration and mobility
•Mobilising Investments for African structural and sustainable transformation
Leaders also adopted a joint statement on the migrant situation in Libya, condemning the inhuman treatment of migrants and refugees by criminal groups. More

Joint Statement on Advancing of the AREI, 7 December 2015
In a Joint Statement of support to advance the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, United States of America, United Kingdom, EU and Sweden committed on 7 Dec 2015 to mobilize at least USD 10 billion USD cumulatively from 2015-2020. The Netherlands later joined the group.

ElectriFi
The Electrification Financing Initiative (ElectriFI) is a flexible financial facility funded by the European Commission and managed by the Association of European Development Finance Institutions (EDFI).
ElectriFI aims to support investments that increase and/or improve access to modern, affordable and sustainable energy services. The projects must lead to new and improved connections for populations living principally in rural, under-served areas as well as regions affected by unreliable power supply in developing countries. 1. The African Renewable Energy Technology Platform
The AFRETEP is one of the activities foreseen within the project "Scientific and Technical Support to Sustainable Energy Development in Africa: Rural Electrification, Renewable Energy and Communication". - DG DEVCO
1. Presentation
The Commission's Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO) is responsible for designing European international cooperation and development policy and delivering aid throughout the world.
DG DEVCO's work is carried out with the ultimate aim of:
- reducing poverty in the world;
- ensuring sustainable development;
- promoting democracy, peace and security.
As well as designing policies to achieve these objectives, DG DEVCO is responsible for implementing the EU’s external aid instruments. DG DEVCO coordinates the actions of the EU institutions, the EU Member States and other EU actors around the Union's core values, objectives and common priorities.

2. Organisational structure of DEVCO

1. Presentation
Unit C6 "Sustainable Energy and Climate Change" is in charge of the management of the international cooperation and development policies related to sustainable energy and climate change. Unit C6 provides support and guidance to Delegations and other Units within DEVCO and is also in charge of the implementation of a portfolio of projects/programmes in these thematic areas.
Concerning Sustainable Energy, the Unit's activities enhance the external dimension of the EU's energy policy and contribute to the attainment of SDG 7 and SDG 13 including through support to global initiatives such as Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL). In particular the Unit's work focuses on three main challenges:
– Address energy poverty by ensuring better access for all to energy services that are affordable, reliable, resilient, clean and sustainable, with a strong focus on renewable energy;
– Support the improvement of regulatory frameworks and increasing partner countries' capacities to stimulate investment for renewable energy and energy efficiency;
– Tackle climate change by promoting low carbon climate resilient economies.
