Transport in a Green Economy, GIZ, 2012
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) launched its 'Green Economy Initiative' in 2008 and provides a definition for green economy as the economy "that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities". However, there is a variety of definitions by different organisations.
Green transport is one of the main sectors addressed in the green economy approach. Transport is considered 'green' when is supports environmental sustainability, i.e. protection of the global climate, ecosystems, public health and natural resources. The goal of green transport is not only to reduce air pollution but also to reduce poverty and support economic growth.
