Advancing Media Support Through Coordinated Action
News details
A Collaborative Effort for Media and Information
The Development Co-operation Principles for Relevant and Effective Support to Media and the Information Environment were created by the OECD Development Assistance Committee’s Network on Governance (GovNet) to address the evolving challenges of the global media sector. Published in May 2024, these principles aim to enhance the effectiveness of international efforts in a rapidly transforming information landscape. Developed through an inclusive consultation process, the principles were shaped by the collective input of OECD GovNet members, partners, and stakeholders.
Advancing Implementation Strategies at the OECD GovNet Meeting
From November 20–22, 2024, OECD GovNet members and partners convened in Paris. A dedicated half-day session focused on the implementation of the Media Principles, sharing strategies and insights to promote the principles effectively. Key objectives included:
- Identifying effective strategies and documenting best practices for disseminating and implementing the Media Principles.
- Analysing constraints to implementation and exploring solutions.
- Highlighting opportunities for knowledge-sharing, learning, and improved coordination.
During this session, the Team Europe Democracy (TED) Secretariat presented its WG3 Media and Digital activity designed to support the principles’ implementation.
Introducing the Toolkit for Implementation
A core activity of the TED WG3 is the development of a "Toolkit" that will:
- Guide the contextualisation of the principles to fit local circumstances.
- Strengthen sustainable media ecosystems through tailored approaches.
- Promote the operationalisation and widespread adoption of the OECD Media Principles.
Looking Ahead
The toolkit is planned to be presented at the TED Network Annual Meeting in 2025. This ongoing work underscores the collaboration between the OECD GovNet and the Team Europe Democracy Initiative to fostering resilient and sustainable media ecosystems worldwide.
