Closing a Chapter, Continuing a Movement: WYDE Political Parties Celebrates Emerging Leaders in Ghana

On 6 August 2026, the EU WYDE Closing Workshop: “Celebrating and Shaping the Future of Democratic Participation” brought together young political leaders, mentors, facilitators and institutional partners in Accra, Ghana, to mark the successful conclusion of the WYDE Political Parties programme implemented by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Ghana Office, in partnership with the European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP) and funded by the European Union.

The closing event celebrated much more than the completion of a training programme. It provided an opportunity to reflect on a leadership journey that brought together 30 emerging political leaders and equipped them with practical skills, new networks and spaces for cross-party exchange. Over the course of the programme, participants completed three residential trainings and three mentorship sessions, strengthening their capacities in leadership, communication, advocacy, policy engagement, professionalism and personal development. 

The workshop opened with a focal session led by Laurenz Van Ginneken, ENoP WYDE Project Manager in Brussels, reflecting on the programme’s overall outcomes, challenges and opportunities. Institutional remarks followed from Anna Wasserfall, KAS Ghana Country Representative; Jonas Claes, Deputy Head of European Union Delegation to Ghana; and Laurenz Van Ginneken on behalf of ENoP, reinforcing the shared commitment to supporting meaningful youth participation in democratic governance. 

A documentary presentation revisited key moments from the WYDE journey, before graduates themselves took centre stage in the panel discussion “From Agency to Action: Young Leaders Shaping the Future of Democracy.” Participants reflected on their experiences, the relationships built throughout the programme and how they intend to carry their learning forward into their political, professional and community engagement. Reflection and experience-sharing were central objectives of the closing workshop, alongside strengthening connections among participants, mentors, facilitators and partners. 

The graduation ceremony formally recognised the commitment of the 30 participants who completed the programme. Certificates were presented to graduates, while outstanding participants were recognised for achievements across areas including leadership, active participation, teamwork, communication, commitment and personal growth. Mentors and facilitators who contributed their expertise and guidance throughout the programme were also honoured for their role in supporting the development of emerging leaders. 

Beyond individual achievements, one of the programme’s most significant outcomes has been the relationships created across political backgrounds. Through repeated opportunities for dialogue, mentoring and collaborative learning, WYDE has helped foster a network of young leaders able to exchange perspectives across party lines and continue supporting one another beyond the formal life of the programme.

The closing workshop therefore marked both an ending and a beginning. As participants received their certificates, the focus turned towards what comes next: applying the knowledge, confidence and networks developed through WYDE within political parties, institutions and communities, and continuing to contribute to more inclusive democratic participation in Ghana.

Strengthening democracy is a long-term endeavour. The impact of a leadership programme cannot be measured only by the activities completed, but also by the choices its participants make afterwards and the relationships they continue to build. The commitment shown throughout this journey offers a strong foundation for these emerging leaders to continue shaping Ghana’s democratic future.

Through the WYDE Political Parties project, ENoP and its implementing partners continue to support women and young people in strengthening their political leadership, expanding opportunities for meaningful participation and building connections capable of sustaining democratic engagement beyond individual activities.
