The Continental Workshop for the presentation and discussion of the cost Benefit analysis of the SBAS

The Continental Workshop for the presentation and discussion of the cost Benefit analysis of the Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) for improving safety and operational efficiency in the African aviation sector has been jointly organized by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), and hosted by the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority (RCAA) in Kigali (Rwanda) from 30th to 31st May, 2022. It has been supported technically and financially by the EU-funded project Technical Assistance (TA) to African Union (AU)/Infrastructure Support Mechanism (ISM), a project implemented by DT Global.

The Satellite-based Augmentation System (SBAS) is wide-area system that uses a network of ground stations and geostationary satellites to broadcast augmentation information providing a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal integrity information, and, an increased precision to 1 m (horizontal) and 2 m (vertical) with applications and positive impacts in a number of economic sectors: mainly air transport, but also road transport, maritime, agriculture, and environment.

The objective of the SBAS Continental Workshop was to submit for consideration and validation of the study on the Cost Benefits Analysis (CBA) of the SBAS Implementation in Africa, carried out by the EU Support to Infrastructure Support Mechanism (ISM TA). The Workshop aimed at grouping Air Transport Experts (including Agriculture and Maritime Experts) from the 55 AU Member States, mainly civil aviation authorities, air transport industry associations and sector experts from RECs (Regional Economic Communities).
