The Democracy Shield: Call For Evidence
News details
The European Commission has launched the European Democracy Shield (EDS), a new initiative aimed at safeguarding and strengthening democratic systems across the European Union. The EDS seeks to address risks to democracy, including foreign interference, disinformation, and threats to the rule of law.
Building upon existing frameworks such as the European Democracy Action Plan, the Digital Services Act, and the AI Act, the EDS aims to enhance media literacy, support independent journalism, and promote civic engagement. It also focuses on protecting democratic institutions and processes within the EU and in candidate countries.
To ensure a comprehensive approach, the Commission is conducting a public consultation to gather input from stakeholders, including civil society organisations, academia, and the general public. This participatory process will help shape the priorities and scope of the EDS.
For more information and to participate in the consultation, please visit the European Commission's 'Have Your Say' portal: European Democracy Shield Initiative.
