// Context

Producing highly creative documentaries requires ever greater resources, which are difficult to secure at national level, whatever the country’s size. The audiovisual landscape is changing rapidly. Large economic concentrations and rapid technological changes are on the increase. Constant development is vital.

EURODOCmed brought together 14 documentary professionals from Algeria, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia and Turkey for a course involving four training seminars over an 18-month period.

// Project objectives

The aim of the EURODOCmed programme was to improve the quality of development of documentary projects and set up a network of European documentary decision-makers and professionals from the southern Mediterranean countries.

This objective responds to the need to extend the scope of Arab production to the whole world, with not only a cultural but also an economic interest. The dynamism of documentary production depends on encounters with other cultures and experiences.

By training and increasing the professionalism of documentary producers and consolidating their ability to work in an international context, this programme has boosted the cinematographic capabilities of young Arab producers. It has also encouraged cooperation between the southern Mediterranean countries, through the co-production of projects and the showing of films on television and at festivals not only in the region, but also in Europe and beyond. To that end, these professionals have travelled across the region and gained genuine international experience.

// Action and impact

1. Network of 143 professionals from 16 European countries and 6 Mediterranean countries.

2. Four training sessions in three countries (Turkey, France and Portugal) involving 14 participants and 12 documentary projects.

3. Out of these 12 projects, 8 films were made, all of which received prizes at international festivals (nearly 70%).

4. Development of bilateral contacts: Mediterranean/Europe. Some of the programme’s participants attended the Sunny Side of the Doc market (France) and the IDFA Documentary Festival (the Netherlands) under the supervision of the film-maker Syrienne Hala Abdallah.

The EURODOCmed programme has enabled other cooperation and partnerships to be developed, such as the "DOCmed – 2011-2013” programme, which provides training in the international co-production of documentaries.
