How can we act together on global issues such as migration, climate change and inequalities that impact citizens across the globe, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? At the fifth edition of the European Parliament’s flagship youth event, EYE, the DEAR Programme will play an active role in proposing and co-creating such joint actions.

The DEAR Programme gives young people the opportunity to be key agents of change on global issues. At the EYE, DEAR projects will offer event participants the chance to learn about food sustainability myths and sustainable food supply chains, reflect on how to encourage youth mobilisation for collective change, and create street actions on global issues. They will also share opportunities on how to act for global change through their pan-European projects.

Four DEAR projects will run the following workshops:

  1. Bringing People & Planet together: Young people are here to help! (Project “People and Planet”)
  2. Our Food, Our Future: How to ensure sustainable food supply chains?
  3. Eat4Change: mobilising youth for sustainable diets
  4. Empowering youth for climate action: voices from the Food Wave project

In line with Global Citizenship Education, they will all promote critical thinking and active citizenship.

The EYE2023 registration is now closed, but if you did register you are invited to take action and partake in the workshops!

If you did not register, you can still participate in the EYE23 online or in the EYE Village. More information will be available in the spring at https://european-youth-event.europarl.europa.eu/en/

The DEAR workshops will be:

1. Bringing people and planet together: Young people are here to help!

Three in four young European citizens consider the climate crisis a priority, as they are already feeling the effects and the severe impact it has for the planet and its people. But does that mean that youth have access to the right tools to address the issue? How many times have you found yourself wanting to contribute to sustainable development, but not knowing how to act? Or do you feel that you already do what you can, but without structural changes and support from local authorities and institutions, it is hard to achieve meaningful changes? The good news: it is possible to ally individual with collective action to promote a bigger change. Join this session to discover the project People and Planet: A Common Destiny and how you can become a main actor and driver of change. Let’s boost our action for the world we want!

2. Our Food, Our Future: How to ensure sustainable food supply chains?

Have you ever wondered where your food comes from? Have you heard of the Due Diligence Law and how it can contribute to a fairer and more sustainable food system? How do we make sure our food supply chains are sustainable, and that they don’t contribute to climate change or environmental destruction? How do we make sure our food supply chains are free of human rights violations? Join this session to learn about and discuss the main societal challenges we face in Europe and worldwide related to food production and consumption.

3. Eat4Change: mobilising youth for sustainable diets

Young people are at the heart of the “Eat4Change” EU DEAR project. Dive into the world of Eat4Change, learn more about why food matters, how you can make an impact by eating sustainably and get active to influence your peers and the world around you. Meet other inspiring youth from around the world who are leading the way. Hear inspiring stories and good practices for motivating and engaging other youth and getting active around the theme of climate and sustainable diets from the national to international level. This workshop will make you feel empowered and inspired to be part of the change!

4. Empowering youth for climate action: voices from the Food Wave project

Food Wave,  led by the Municipality of Milan, engages young people to take action and influence institutional decisions. Its signature activities are street actions co-created by young people and with Municipalities, in which youth engage with their local community and propose solutions for a sustainable food system. In this workshop, these young people will highlight the key steps to develop effective street actions: how to dialogue with local institutions, how to engage the community and which innovative tools can be used. Join this session and get inspired to take action!
