Funds for Climate Justice
News details
SPARK!/ClimAct - Global activists help get unanimous vote to establish the climate “Loss and Damage Fund” at COP27 in Egypt.
“SPARK!/ClimAct” campaigned for the proposed “Loss and Damage Fund” online, at festivals and other events across Europe.
The project worked with Elizabeth Wathuti, a renowned climate activist from Kenya to help establish the “Loss and Damage Fund” at the 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt. Elizabeth and other advocates for climate justice campaigned for a dedicated fund to compensate and support those hit hardest by climate change.
“SPARK!/ClimAct” organised Elizabeth’s European tour in the lead up to COP27. Through 15 events, including inspirational talks, meetings with fellow activists, national and European M(E)Ps and interviews with journalists in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, Elisabeth collected over 133 000 signatures for her letter to world leaders.
At COP27, thousands of hand-drawn postcards from children across Europe were also handed to the national delegates calling for climate justice. Several delegates showed and mentioned the postcards during their official speeches or social media videos and messages.
All represented countries agreed to establish the “Loss and Damage Fund” - thanks to the tireless efforts of a united group of over 70 most affected nations, along with activists like Elisabeth and some “Spark!”
