Greater Portmore Comprehensive Health Centre 97% Complete

Work on the new building at the Greater Portmore Comprehensive Health Centre is 97% complete, putting the expansion within reach of handover.

The new 1,252-square-metre building transforms the current Type 3 facility into a Type 5 comprehensive primary healthcare centre. It adds oral rehydration, laboratory services, an isolation room, an X-ray room, treatment and procedure rooms, an asthma bay, diabetic retinopathy screening, and physiotherapy with examination and exercise rooms.

The project represents an investment of JMD 660 million covering construction, equipment and furnishings. Funding comes primarily from the European Union investment grant into the HSSP, with the Government of Jamaica covering biomedical equipment, furniture and sewage works. China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) is carrying out the construction.

Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr the Hon Christopher Tufton, told JIS and other media at the groundbreaking that the project would be a “game changer” in primary health care delivery.

Ground was broken for this project in December 2024, in response to a steady rise in patient visits to the Portmore facility over the years and the urgent need for larger, more modern accommodation. The expanded centre is designed to reduce the need for Portmore residents to travel to Spanish Town or Kingston for primary healthcare services, and to ease pressure on nearby hospitals such as Spanish Town Hospital.
