Minister Soeresh Algoe of Suriname opened the 2014 Caribbean Week of Agriculture with the theme “Transforming Caribbean Agriculture through Family Farming”. His Excellency declared that the Republic of Suriname is honored to host the event considering the fundamental role of agriculture in accelerating sustainable development, and encouraged discussions on strategic issues regarding the future of agriculture in the area especially as part of developing and enhancing national strategies.
The opening seminar on Family Farming has received wide Social Media coverage from Caricom, Insight Magazine and CTA along with Women in Business Development International Samoa as part of its Social Media reporting team. Here are a few of the highlights of the event:








The workshop on Smart-Climate Change for Agriculture addressed issues such as climate variability and change, small ruminant development in the context of climate change, fisheries development in the Caribbean in the context of climate change, as well as climate change, agriculture and land use planning.

Agrihack Talent Competition is a programme launched by CTA to support young initiatives for developing ICT applications, entrepreneurship spirit and business for agriculture. As part of the competition, contestants developed ICT applications for agriculture via hackathons and coding sessions, as well as launched capacity building sessions. Currently, the activities are being implemented in the Caribbean and East African regions and CTA is looking for partners to take the programme to the next level.
