If the last two years have taught us anything, it should be that education for peace, global justice, sustainability, human rights and solidarity is more important than ever in tackling the major challenges that face the world today. To this end, GENE (Global Education Network Europe) brought together 250 policymakers and stakeholders in June 2021 to launch a process leading to the development of a new European Declaration on Global Education to 2050. Since then, consultations have been ongoing regarding what the declaration should contain in terms of a vision of Global Education for the future and commitments that strengthen Global Education as part of all learning - in policy, funding and practice.

The process will culminate on 3-4 November 2022 with the European Congress on Global Education in Dublin Castle, Ireland, an event that will bring together national delegations, civil society organisations, youth organisations, local and regional governments, researchers, global critical friends and international organisations for the finalisation of the new Declaration. GENE is very grateful to the Irish Minister for Development Cooperation, Mr Colm Brophy, and Irish Aid for agreeing to host the forthcoming Congress, and to colleagues from Ministries and Agencies and from a range of organisations across Europe who are engaged and contribute to the process of co-constructing the declaration.

The strong political will seen so far from European leaders in support and recognition of Global Education is promising. Global Education needs to be at the heart of education and learning, and at the core of foreign, development and other key national policy agendas, in order to ensure access for all. GENE is sure that the impetus of a new Declaration on Global Education in Europe to 2050 will support real change and enable Europeans to be citizens of and for the world through transformative education.
