// Context
When children in Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia or Vietnam watch TV only a small fraction of the broadcasts offer educational content and knowledge.
In order to respond to the pressing need for more children‘s programmes produced in Southeast Asia and encouraged by the interest of a number of educational authorities in new options for conveying knowledge, the Goethe-Institutes of Southeast Asia started a pilot programme to kick off production of a children’s knowledge magazine. Seven state and public television broadcasters in seven countries took part in it with 21 journalists. The Goethe-Institut focus was on capacity building (training workshops for the production teams; on-location consultation) and encouraging cross-cultural and cross-border cooperation by fostering an interregional professional network.
// Project objectives
The global goal is to open new horizons, enhancing professional skills and building networks for conveying knowledge to young people in Southeast Asia.
The specific goals are to:
- ensure that television programme-makers in Southeast Asia are aware of the potentials of their medium for creating access for the knowledge society;
- jointly develop a programme format (magazine) as the basis for a series and co-produce the first season;
- exchange and transfer knowledge between German and Southeast Asian television producers.
// Expected impact
The project will develop and establish a new regional TV-format for conveying knowledge to young people. The expected results are:
- Screening of the first series of I Got It! takes place in October 2010 in all 7 countries.
- The pilot programme will reinforce capacities and share techniques, enabling television journalists to produce their own formats, adapted to young audiences in each of the countries.
- The further training and the network of experts from the various broadcasting companies will ensure the durability of the project.
