News details

Delegates from nearly 200 nations have started descending on Samoa since the beginning of the week to attend the  Third Conference on SIDS between the 1st and 4th September 2014. Among them, a dozen presidents and heads of states, hundreds of elected representatives, private sector executives, NGOs and heads of international organisations will be part of the expected 3000 participants.

Samoa is one of the 20 Pacific SIDS out of 52 in the world. SIDS come from three geographic regions: the Caribbean, Africa, the Indian Ocean, Mediterranean and South China Sea (AIMS) and the Pacific and account for about 5% of total world population.

Samoa started preparations for the Conference more than a year ago and village communities around the country have been engaged in gardening, landcaping and cleaning the environment. The time of the conference coincides with Samoa's annual Teuila festival which draws annually large amounts of tourists.
