Learning for Lasting Peace
News details
“Learning for Lasting Peace” was the theme of this year’s International Day of Education on 24 January. The link between Global Citizenship Education and peace is at the heart of the work of the EU DEAR Programme´s partner, the Council of Europe’s (CoE) North-South Centre. Its annual Global Education Week, with 26 participating countries, was dedicated to “Peace for the Planet, A Planet of Peace”. In one action in Croatia, 640 students and around 100 teachers and staff discussed the issues around peace in their classes and actively participated in a local Peace March
In 2024, the North-South Centre will continue to drive education policy dialogues between Global Education actors from four sectors: 1) civil society, 2) local and regional authorities, 3) national parliaments and 4) governments - in a “quadrilogue” model. The iLEGEND III DEAR project will continue to build the Global Education capacities and methodologies of youth, policymakers and educators, including through its Global Education Network.
CoE Education Ministers recently launched a new Education Strategy 2024-2030, introduced the new instrument “European Space for Citizenship Education”, and created a toolkit on emergency education rights. Initiatives such as the 2025 European Year of Digital Citizenship Education and Artificial intelligence regulation in education were also set in motion.
Global Citizenship Education nurtures solidarity, understanding, and cooperation among individuals and communities across borders and continents. Teachers and educators help foster values for a culture of peace. Together we can actively campaign and inspire people to take action for a world of greater peace, solidarity, social and climate justice. #iLEGEND #SDG4 #GlobalCitizenship @CentarzaMirovneStudije #euDEARprogramme
