M4D and EU Delegation to Tanzania Fellowship Launch in Copenhagen

Denmark, September 2018 – A cohort of Fellows from Tanzania began a four-week intensive programme in Denmark on 10 September. The programme is designed to strengthen the leadership skills of emerging leaders working in organisations at the forefront of promoting and protecting media pluralism and freedom in Tanzania.

During their time in Denmark, the Fellows will engage with highly-experienced coaches and peers from across the media landscape in Denmark. They are hosted at the Danish Union of Journalists and Danish Media – two globally-renowned institutions that enable and support media freedom and pluralism in Denmark. As a result of the programme, Fellows will develop new skills and extract key insights and learnings about how to build strong organisations and platforms for effective advocacy in Tanzania.

The Fellows will be coached by Media4Democracy Expert, Mogens Blicher Bjerregård, as part of a pilot project supported by the EU Delegation to Tanzania before returning to work on their own initiatives and to provide a platform for sharing learning and promoting collaborative ways of advancing effective advocacy.

 “Improving dialogue among media stakeholders is essential and could have a strong impact on media pluralism,” says Bjerregård. “Strong, cooperative institutions are very important for upholding media pluralism and influencing effective media legislation and we are delighted to be working with the EU Delegation to Tanzania to help support emerging leaders in this area.”

The Fellowship project – Strengthening Media Institutions in Support of Media Pluralism – works with EU Delegations in different countries to select and support a group of Fellows in potential leadership positions of institutions that can make a difference to media freedom and pluralism in their own country.

The Fellowship programme is run by Media4Democracy in the framework of a Technical Assistance facility established by DEVCO to support Delegations in developing countries to implement the EU Human Rights Guidelines on Freedom of Expression Online and Offline.
