// Context

In a context where freedom of expression is regularly at stake, the vulnerable investigative journalism sector should be supported and the quality of journalistic production improved. This requires the practical organisation of upskilling for journalists experienced in these areas.

// Project objectives

Participation of around 20 journalists from the written, electronic, radio and television press in a support programme for the written, radio and television press in Tunisia.

// Action and impact

1. In the area of the written press:

  • Practical training in a written or radio and television press company in the French-speaking Community of Belgium for journalists from the French-speaking and Arab-speaking press.

The aim of the training is to bring together Tunisian journalists with their Belgian counterparts so that they can work together on investigations in the area of participatory democracy (political, economic, social, environmental) in Belgium. Belgian journalists can pass on their know-how to their Tunisian colleagues. The articles or sequences will then be published or shown in the Belgian and Tunisian media. In addition to capacity-building with regard to investigative journalism, the Tunisian beneficiaries will develop their knowledge of democratic mechanisms in Belgium.

  • Training in Tunisia provided by Belgian journalists or trainers in the sector.

The aim of this second part is similar to the first, but the effect will be greater as the Belgian journalists can allow their Tunisian counterparts to benefit from their experience by adapting it to the local situation. In addition, the Belgian journalists will gain a better understanding of Tunisian modern society.

2. In the area of the radio and television media:

  • Training in Tunisia: debate management in the radio and television media.

This workshop will be led by a Belgian journalist specialising in the organisation of broadcast debates and interviews with politicians. The aim is to bring together around 10 Tunisian journalists and radio and television hosts to learn how to organise a correctly prepared debate or interview. Before the end of the training, the participating journalists will broadcast a debate or interview so that they can also learn from reactions to it.

3. In the area of media regulation:

  • Tunisia has set up an independent national body for the information and communications sector, which is responsible for organising the media and regulating the written, radio and television press.

The aim of this last part is to promote collaboration and cooperation between regulatory bodies in Tunisia and in the French-speaking Community of Belgium. In this context, cooperation between professional bodies for journalists will be desirable and foreseeable.
