Press- release Fiji National Breadfruit Symposium
News details
Nadi, Fiji – The symposium to review breadfruit research and development in Fiji will be held on Wednesday, 27th May at Tokatoka Resort, Nadi.
The one-day gathering of breadfruit experts will be hosted by the Fiji Institute of Agricultural Science in strategic partnerships with Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research (ACIAR), Secretariat of the Pacific Community, Nature’s Way Cooperative, and Koko Siga Pacific.
The symposium will focus discussions on R&D topics including rapid multiplication protocols (using bioreactor tissue culture system), field propagation methods using different types of planting material (root suckers, marcots, tissue culture) on different breadfruit varieties, planting breadfruit as part of a farming system and as a climate change mitigation strategy, commercial breadfruit orchards, opportunities for investment in postharvest processing, and way forward for breadfruit development.
SPC has focused research on evaluating breadfruit diversity and their fruiting patterns, propagation methods (field and laboratory) for mass production of breadfruit seedlings (for quick recovery post natural disasters), and evaluating agronomic practices for commercial production to support the value chain supply system.
A highlight will be a visit to the breadfruit orchard at Legalega as a demonstration site for commercial breadfruit production on marginal lands as well as demonstrating pruning methods to keep breadfruit at manageable heights.
MEDIA ACCESS: Media are invited to the cover the symposium.
