On 22 March 2022 - World Water Day - DEAR project People & Planet launched the Water Of The Future campaign simultaneously in eight EU countries and Cape Verde. Over one month into the pan-European awareness-building, the spot was already viewed by about 18 million people on Facebook and approximately 17 million on YouTube. The aim is to reach a total of 59 million young people in Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, and Cape Verde to take an active role and mobilise society and policy makers to tackle water scarcity.

The project team created a memorable icon: a camel wandering serenely through a city. What is he doing? He is here to deliver a message to someone who is inadvertently wasting water. Someone who, without thinking, forgets that this vital resource is not always available at the twist of a tap.

Global challenges are increasingly local. Recurrent episodes of drought and floods, also in Europe cause the suspension of hydroelectric production or submerge villages and towns. Authorities across the globe call for responsible water consumption. The team developed messages based on facts and scientific predictions.

Watch the spot and spread the campaign: “We are not camels. Without water, there’s no future.”

In the European Year of Youth, this campaign is an opportunity to reinforce the important role that young people can play to highlight a reality of water scarcity for our Planet and People. The “Water Of The Future” campaign is part of the DEAR project People & Planet: A Common Destiny, which focuses on the sustainability of development policies at the glocal (global + local) level, while promoting the participation of young citizens as change-makers.
