What Blue Finance Looks Like on the Ground - LAGreen Fund
News details
For investors, the value of thematic bonds is ultimately measured by what they enable beyond the financial markets.
One year after Banco Nacional de Costa Rica's inaugural blue bond, the first of its kind in the country, the impact is becoming visible in Guanacaste, where water scarcity and climate pressures continue to challenge agricultural production.
Through the LAGreen Fund, managed by Finance in Motion, the bond helped channel financing towards investments that support more efficient water use and environmental stewardship. At Azucarera El Viejo S. A., this has translated into investments in water-saving technologies, water treatment systems, and biodiversity measures, reducing water consumption by more than 30% while supporting renewable energy generation, resilience, and ecosystem protection.
The experience offers a practical example of how blue finance can help address water-related challenges while supporting productive economic activity and long-term sustainability.
As investors increasingly seek measurable environmental outcomes, initiatives like this demonstrate how capital can help strengthen water resilience where it is needed most.
