When Care Starts with a Bus Stop
News details
In Somogyszentpál, a small village near Lake Balaton in Hungary, the bus stop was more than just a place to catch a ride. For many young people, it was the only place to meet.
But for years, it had been falling apart – rusted, leaking, unsafe. Children were afraid to stand under it. Promises to fix it had come and gone. Nothing changed.
Until the community decided to act.
Through the YOU(th) CARE for CHANGE initiative, young people in the Roma neighbourhood of Kisperjés turned a simple idea into a collective project: rebuild the bus stop themselves.
Over three summer weekends in 2025, something remarkable happened. Local youth, parents, international volunteers and neighbours came together to design, build and paint a new bus station from scratch. People brought tools, materials, food — and, just as importantly, trust.
“It hadn’t happened for years,” one participant shared. “People working, cooking, creating together.”
By August, the new bus stop was ready.
But what emerged was more than a structure.
Today, the bus stop is a safe, open meeting space – a place where young people gather, connect and feel part of something. A small but powerful symbol of what happens when communities take ownership of their future.
The impact didn’t stop there. Since then, the community has continued to organise workshops, theatre activities and regular meetings, bringing together young people and families to shape their shared priorities.
In a village where opportunities are limited and trust has been fragile, the project marked a turning point.
Because sometimes, building a bus stop is really about building something else entirely: connection, confidence, and a sense that change is possible – together.
