This indicator captures the independence of the judiciary from the influence of external actors; whether the judiciary has the ability and autonomy to interpret and review existing laws, legislation and policy; and the integrity of the process of appointing and removing national-level judges. It consists of three sub-indicators:
1. Independent Judiciary (BS) – Bertelsmann Transformation Index (BTI) (source: Bertelsmann Stiftung)
2. Judicial Autonomy (WEF) – Global Competitiveness Report (source: World Economic Forum)
3. Judicial Independence (GI) – IIAG calculation
* NOTE: Only African countries covered. Could use Judicial independence index from the WEF for non-African countries.
