4. CTA at EDD2015: Enhancing agricultural productivity & farmers welfare through ICT - Thursday 4th June 2015, 12:30-13:45pm – Room S3
Discussion details
The 9th edition of European Development Days 2015 (EDD2015) will take place from 3-4th June at Tour & Taxi, Brussels. This panel addresses the key challenges of food security, sustainable agriculture and poverty eradication, which feature amongst the 14 themes identified by the FAO in its contribution to the reflection on the post-2015 development agenda. Currently, 63% of the Sub-Saharan Africa’s population still hasn’t reached the food security level; at least 800 million people suffer from hunger. Yet agriculture represents on average 60% of the jobs, 45% of the land and 13% of the GDP in the area. The session aims to show and discuss how mobile solutions contribute to addressing these challenges through more efficient use of resources, the enhancement of agricultural productivity, the modernization of the value chain and the increase of farmers’ income. Focusing on Africa, the panelists will draw on concrete examples of services for farmers developed through multi-sector partnerships. Two main challenges will be debated with the audience: how to adapt solutions to local farmers’ needs and how to make them sustainable. Speakers include Amadou Brah Adamou, Project Manager, mAgri, Orange, François Laureys, Country programme manager for Mali and Burkina Faso, mFarm project manager, International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD), Ken Gemma Brice Lohento, Programme Coordinator, ICT for Agriculture, Centre Technique de Coopération Agricole et Rurale (CTA), Tegan Palmer, Analyst, mAgri, GSM Association. The Lab session shall be moderated by Catherine Flouvat, Head of CSR AMEA, Orange, France.
