The EU Delegation in DRC and CIFOR officially launched a new 27-million Euros project at the Yangambi Biosphere Reserve.
Discussion details
On 7 and 8 March, the Head of EU Delegation in DRC and the Deputy Director General of the International Centre for Forestry Research (CIFOR) participated in the launching ceremony of the new FORETS project ("ForĂȘt, Recherche, Environnement dans la TShopo"), which is one of the five site-based components of the 11th European Development Fund investment for biodiversity in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The ceremony took place in the premise of the famous former agronomy research center of INERA, near the Biosphere Forest Reserve of Yangambi, 90 kilometer west from the town of Kisangani.
This project has five main axis: (1) ensuring the conservation and sustainable management of the Yangambi Biosphere Reserve (YBR); (2) supporting rural development and sustainable forest management around YBR to the benefit of the surrounding population; (3) refurbishing some infrastructure of the University of Kisangani (UNIKIS) and the Institut Facultaire d'Agronomie (IFA); (4) strengthening higher education programmes in forestry and agronomy at UNIKIS and IFA; (5) supporting research activities and projects with the beneficiary institutions.
