B4Life: United for Biodiversity
The EU Biodiversity for Life (B4Life) flagship initiative is designed to help the poorest countries protect ecosystems, combat wildlife crime and develop green economies. B4Life is financed from the EU Global Public Goods and Challenges (GPGC) Thematic Program and regional and national development cooperation envelopes of the Development Cooperation Instrument (DCI), European Development Fund (EDF) and European Neighbourhood Instrument (ENI).
In line with the EU’s Agenda for Change, B4Life will focus on Least Developed Countries and countries containing “biodiversity hotspots”, places where ecosystems and their services are richest but also most threatened.
B4Life operates in three priority areas:

Africa’s wildlife is disappearing at an alarming rate, encroached on by a human population set to double by 2050. The latest European Commission report on conserving the continent’s biodiversity is entitled ‘Larger than Elephants’, reflecting that the species and landscapes at risk go far beyond Africa’s iconic mammal. The impact of species loss and environmental degradation will in turn be much ‘larger than wildlife’: it will affect local livelihoods, climate change, migration, peace and security.
