Discussion details

Created 23 September 2011

In June this year, a group of countries and international organizations, in charge of the Knowledge Sharing Pillar of the G20 Development Working Group, submitted an in-depth report on how to scale up knowledge sharing as an effective and distinctive tool for development, complementing financial cooperation and technical assistance.

Responding to the mandate of the G20 Summit in Seoul in late 2011, the objective of this working paper is to recommend how Knowledge Sharing, through North-South, South-South, and triangular cooperation, can be scaled up in support of growth and development processes. It draws on analysis conducted globally by the international organizations such as the United Nations Development Program, the World Bank, and the OECD, as well as on case stories and studies from across all regions collected over the past two years by the Task Team on South-South Cooperation.

Among its main contents, the G20 report titled "Scaling up Knowledge Sharing for Development"establishes a series of practices for knowledge sharing:

  • How to ensure a sound policy-practice balance
  • How to broker knowledge, including through multilateral channels.
  • How to design and implement result-oriented knowledge sharing activities
  • How to develop country-level institutional arrangements for knowledge sharing
  • How to fund knowledge sharing in a smart and flexible way
  • How to ensure quality and invest in good practices

The full report is available here (pdf).
