Discussion details

Today marks the end of the Gender month within the European Year for Development.

CARE France advocacy officer, Fanny Petitbon, spoke recently to capacity4dev about the link between gender and climate change, as well as how her organisation promotes gender equality in developing countries.

In Niger, for example, CARE empowers women through savings-driven microfinance schemes.

"By doing that we realised that this platform, beyond just empowering women economically, was really giving them tools to be more self-confident, to be seen by men in the community - including leaders - as economic actors, but then also people that had something interesting to say. So they were able to participate in local decisions, in local councils. That was a virtuous circle because women were gaining self-confidence and men were seeing them as their equal partners."
