The Economist’s special report on private education stirred a debate among education specialists. The report defends that private education is good at providing access where the state does not have capacity (You may find the links to each article on the report at the end of this post and read 5 of them for free if you sign up to the Economist's website).

However, some experts think that the report is not reflecting the reality. Prachi Srivastava, Associate Professor, University of Western Ontario, published an article titled “Education Pandora’s Box? A look at developments in the Global South” heavily criticising the Economist. She argues that the data does not show clear learning gains from private education.

Recently published OXFAM report backs up Srivastava’s arguments. It suggests that delivering education through public-private partnerships risks fueling inequality instead of achieving quality education for all.

The role of private sector in education was discussed in the last year’s Annual Education Seminar. You may find all the documents in our dedicated Wiki Page. The presentations of the Session 5 on the role of the governments and the private sector are available on this link.

The debate during the Annual Seminar is summarised on this Capacity4Dev Article on the private and public provisions of education: https://europa.eu/capacity4dev/articles/debate-over-private-and-public-provisions-education
