Please join us at COP25 at the following side events where Fairtrade International will be speaking, together with partner organisations Munich Climate Insurance Initiative (MCII) and International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) :
Side event: Carbon farming initiatives and climate risk insurance
Date/Time: 4th December 2019 from 14.30-16.00hr
Location: EU Pavilion
Co-organisers/Speakers: Fairtrade International, Munich Climate Insurance Initiative, International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), and the French Livestock Institute
The French Livestock Institute will discuss the diverse contributions that the cattle sector makes in Europe, the challenge it faces and the focused efforts underway to reduce GHG emissions. Fairtrade will highlight the critical role that smallholder farmer networks such Fairtrade can play in up-scaling climate risk insurance which has increasingly been recognized as an integral component of climate change adaptation, particularly in the agricultural sector. Challenges faced by smallholder farmers and factors to be considered to enable climate risk insurance uptake and benefits for the poor and vulnerable will be discussed. Lessons learned from Climate Risk Insurance activities in the Latin America and Caribbean region will also be shared.

At this side event, Fairtrade will be joined by a cocoa Peruvian producer from the Fairtrade Regional Network for Latin America and the Caribbean (CLAC) who will be sharing first-hand experience of the impact of climate extremes on smallholder farmers in the region and good practices that are building effective climate resilience. We will be announcing at the event further details on the Fairtrade partnership with MCII including a project proposal to pilot a Climate Risk Insurance scheme for banana producers.
