This initiative, developed by the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) in collaboration with GLAAS and Emory University, is based on several years of expert feedback. These priority gender-specific indicators are designed to address gender inequalities in access to WASH facilities and improve monitoring efforts globally.
Key Areas Covered by the Indicators:
- Water insecurity: Indicators track the time women and children spend collecting water and their experiences of water shortages, which disproportionately affect them, particularly in rural areas.
- Safety concerns: These include risks of harm or assault when accessing water, sanitation, and hygiene services, especially in unsafe or poorly managed environments.
- Menstrual hygiene management: Focuses on challenges in accessing safe, private, and clean facilities for menstruation and the availability of menstrual materials, which impacts education and employment participation.
