Water and jobs are inextricably linked on various levels including an economic, environmental or social perspective. Nearly 80% of the jobs constituting the global workforce are dependent upon having access to an adequate supply of water and water-related services, including sanitation. Water stress and the lack of decent work can exacerbate security challenges. Water is, therefore, essential to decent jobs as well as sustainable development. Water scarcity or poor water quality, is often linked to damaged ecosystems resulting in instability that can lead to forced migration. Trained water professionals are too few in number to ensure good water management. Research and studies show a growing lack of qualified workers in the water and water–related sectors. Women and youth remain under-represented.

The session of the 'Water and Beyond' event With knowledge and skills: water as the engine for economic development and jobs, explored the role of capacity building and skill development for the water sector. Speakers in this session analysed capacity building gaps and the implication for decision making, management and service provision at regional and national level. This included a review of curricula as well as target groups. How can water create economic development and growth? The session discussed policy, regulatory, economic measures and capacity development tools as a way forward.
