As a pre-conference to the National Health Research Forum, the Lao Tropical and Public Health Institute (Lao TPHI), organised  the 4th Adolescent Research Day (ARD) ‘Gender Equality among adolescents: Issues, challenges, and way forward’ which was held at 15 October 2019. The LEARN consortium, together with UNFPA, supported this conference and researchers shared their work conducted within the LEARN program.

Dr Kethmany Ratsavong demonstrated that both macro and micro-nutrient intake is inadequate for both boys and girls in Lao PDR. Dr Khampeng Phongluxa shared the gender inequalities in relation to schooling, nutrition and sexual and reproductive health among adolescents in Savannakhet province in Lao PDR. In a keynote H.E. Madame Bandith Pathoumvanh, Vice President of Lao Women’s Union and Chairperson of NCAWMC, highlighted in her speech the importance of ‘participatory action research’ to improve the situation of girls. It is especially such kind of research that was shared by our PhD candidate Viengakhone Vonxay. He demonstrated his participatory work with youth on making videos for BCC.
