A new engagement and knowledge sharing platform offers tools to localize the SDGs
Discussion details
One year after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and its set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the local implementation is now fully underway. Local and regional governments, together with a wide array of local stakeholders, are poised to play a critical role in the implementation and monitoring of the agenda. In order to support them in this complex task, the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments (GTF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) are pleased to announce the launch of the virtual platform: www.LocalizingTheSDGs.org.
The platform is offered as a pioneering knowledge and information sharing space on the implementation of the SDGs at the local level. It provides concrete tools and practices for local policy makers, development practitioners and other relevant actors to support countries in the implementation and achievement of the Global Goals at the local level. The resources are divided around three main categories, taking users from the point of initializing the SDG localization process, setting up enabling institutional frameworks and finishing with resources to support capacities' strengthening. In addition, users can also upload and share their experiences, tools, as well as engage in real-time discussions with all participating partners on the SDG localization.
While the platform is new, it already includes several resources. For instance, it contains: a Roadmap to localize the SDGs; the experience of the Government of Valencia, Spain in integrating the SDGs in its regional strategies and plans; a tool to select the most relevant indicators at the municipal level based on the Brazilian experience, and a guide developed by UNDP to support local governance in fragile and conflict affected settings.
