Discussion details

Created 27 May 2015

The G7 is made of the seven major economically advanced countries: Canada; France; Germany; Italy; Japan; United Kingdom and United States of America. As entity that involves four of the G7 member states, the European Union is usually associated to the G7 initiatives and meetings.

G7 produces every year an Accountability report which provides information on commitments made by leaders in the G7/G8 summits –the principles of accountability and transparency are essential in order to maintain the credibility of the decisions of G8 Leaders.

The first G8 report on the implementation of past commitments was at the 2008 Hokkaido Toyako Summit. The 2009 L’Aquila Summit approved the first, preliminary, Accountability Report and the Terms of Reference for a G8 Accountability Working Group (AWG); and each of the subsequent Summits has adopted an Accountability Report prepared by this AWG.

At the end of last year the G7 German Presidency decided that the theme of the next accountability report (G7 Elmau Accountability Report, June 2015) would be ‘Biodiversity’ and its relationship to G7 climate change commitments.

The work is now completed. Please find below the link to the "G7 Elmau Progress Report – Biodiversity: a vital foundation for sustainable development" prepared by the G7 Presidency, which was launched on the International Day for Biological Diversity, 22 May:
