Video: Mobile schools and social entrepreneurship
Discussion details
Is it possible to combine social action and for-profit entrepreneurship?
Recently, Capacity4dev sat down with a Belgian entrepreneur and Ashoka fellow Arnoud Raskin, who founded Mobile School, an organisation that aims to empower street children by creating mobile school carts and educational materials and training local street workers.
Mobile School is financed through a hybrid model. Part of the funding initially came from grants, and Raskin created a for-profit company Streetwize to fill in the rest.
Using the most effective "street skills" identified among the children taking part in the mobile schools programme, Streetwize created a training methodology for leadership and professional development.
Today, Streetwize's clients include Coca-Cola, Nike and the Walt Disney Company, and Arnaud says all profits go to funding Mobile School.
