Discussion details

Created 07 January 2021

Water is essential for the earth's resilience and sustainable development. The capacity of social-ecological systems to deal with shocks and adapt to changing conditions is fundamentally dependent on the water cycle. Water regulates the earth's climate, supports biomass production, and supplies resources for life. However, massive human interference, water extraction and storage, and land use change have significantly disrupted its natural functions and induced regime shifts in socio-ecological systems.

Speakers at the 'Water and Beyond' event will highlight the critical role of water for building resilience of the planet’s life support system. The session on Water and the Environment: resource management to support nature will explore how to incorporate this understanding in the realisation of the European Green Deal and in policies and programmes that they develop and implement domestically and abroad.
