Discussion details

Created 07 January 2021

Rising economic demands for water, population growth and rapid urbanisation increases water insecurity worldwide, exacerbated climate change and ecosystem losses. Water stress and other water-related risks may aggravate human insecurity, conflict and migration and affect peace. At the same time, water has even more often been a driver for economic development, regional integration, cooperation and peace. Transboundary water agreements have facilitated effective cooperation, enabling the sharing of multiple economic, social and environmental benefits.

This 'Water and Beyond' session Water as a catalyst for cooperation: fostering trust and peace, explored approaches for water cooperation, water governance and water diplomacy for integrated water resources management at global, regional and basin levels. Different cooperative approaches to prevent and mitigate water-related tensions were exposed and discussed. Speakers’ experiences included international legal instruments, intergovernmental platforms, diplomatic mechanisms and transboundary water agreements as well as joint institutions.
