Inequalities in access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) affect disproportionately women and girls, as well as older people and persons with disabilities. Addressing access to WASH is essential to put an end to poverty and achieve any of the other SDGs. With the current health crisis, it has never been as urgent to ensure that healthcare facilities are equipped with WASH infrastructures, and that everywhere, everyone can practice hand-hygiene, drink clean and safe water and use decent sanitation facilities.

WASH serves as key ingredient to guarantee quality education, especially for girls, sustain health, improve livelihoods, boost productivity and make communities more resilient to climate change impacts. Investing in clean water, decent sanitation and hygiene makes investments in other areas such as health, nutrition, education more effective and sustainable. Upscaling WASH services can also create jobs, jump-start local markets and strengthen supply chains.

This 'Water and Beyond' session on Water as an equaliser: realising impact for human development, builds the case on how water can stand as the backbone for equality, prosperity and human development. Invited speakers will share how water contributes to realising impact for human development across all priorities of the EU International Partnerships.
