WaterClima LAC project
Discussion details
The Coastal Zones of Latin America and the Caribbean present inequalities in terms of integration in socio-economic development. Most of them have suffered from the impact of wrong management of watersheds that have dragged sediments, residues and contaminated water thus modifying the ecosystems and affecting the population. Moreover, the effects of the climate change during the last decades are more visible in these zones, enhancing the deterioration of water resources due to coastal intrusion or the increase of extreme events. From an institutional point of view, the Ministries of Environment and Natural Resources have established some preservation and protection areas but the deterioration of natural resources on coastal zones has not been stopped since there were no policies to mitigate climate change effects. Likewise, cities and local organizations have developed efforts to control the swamp’s deforestation, to reduce the effects of pollution and to take advantage of coastal resources. Some organizations have implemented coastal zones management related projects.
